The Camera Car Rig

What the Rig is.

A custom Jib, Vibration Isolator and Gimbal system that can be mounted in either a minivan or pickup truck to provide a wide range of shot options for rolling footage. It is compatible with both Ronin and Movi gimbals.  I recommend the Ronin for heavier camera builds or less complex camera moves, and recommend the Movi for shoots requiring more complex and precise camera moves.

Details to know before Pre-Pro

  1. Scouting a smooth road is key.  The Isolator will remove minor bumps and vibrations from the shot, but past a certain point, the camera will begin to move up and down, causing unwanted paralax.  To circumvent this, Location Scouting for a smooth road is key.
  2. A precise shoot plan, and going in to production with an exact shot list.  Shoots of this nature literally have lots of moving parts.  Changes of plans can’t happen quickly, so establishing a well developed shoot plan and sticking to it provides optimum results.
  3. On tighter budgets and timeframes, a wide variety of static shot angles can be provided.
  4. With more pre-pro and time for individual shots, complex moves can be provided.
  5. Pickup Truck Vs Minivan.  Vehicle of choice is rented by the production.
Pickup Truck provides the maximum angle of shot options.

    1. The Ford F-150 Raptor Quad cab is the ideal vehicle for it’s interior space, bed space and smooth ride. Full size pickup rented through Turo.
    2. The Chrysler Town and Country is an excellent 2nd place choice.  It can fit all required crew and above the line members, but is limited on breadth of angles the camera can be placed. Since all of the production team is within the vehicle, it is a good option for lower budget shoots that do not have a police escort.
  6. What the Rig does not do, is vertically stabilize like a Russian arm, so using smooth roads are critical to achieving liquid smooth footage.
